Red wine from France, Pauillac Appellation , Vintage 2016
The Château Pédesclaux is an estate located in the Pauillac appellation, in the north of the Médoc region. The estate was ranked 5th growth in the Bordeaux classification of 1855, a status it still retains today.
The estate is located in the town of Pauillac. A few kilometers away are the domains of Château d'Armailhac, Pontet-Canet and Mouton Rothschild. Pédesclaux was created in 1810 by wine broker Pierre Urbain Pédesclaux and has been sold several times. In 2009, the estate was purchased by Franco-Swiss real estate millionaire Jacky Lorenzetti. He then launched a program of renovation and acquisition of other high-quality vineyards, almost doubling the size of the estate, which went from 26 hectares to 48 hectares.
The Château Pédesclaux estate is planted mainly with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with some Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The vines, which are grown organically, are generally planted on a gravel over clay subsoil and have an average age of 35 years, although some date back to the 1950s.
The chateau ages its wine for 12 months in French oak barrels that are 60% new and produces around 9,000 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wine each year. The second wine of Château Pédesclaux is a Merlot-dominant wine called Fleur de Pédesclaux, previously known as Lucien de Pédesclaux. This wine is a blend of 3 grape varieties: Cabernet franc, Cabernet-Sauvignon and Merlot.
On the palate, this red wine is powerful, with a nice balance between acidity and tannins. Woody, with some spicy touches from aromas of mint and liquorice, it also hides a subtle floral side (violet and rose petals).
It goes perfectly with game, beef and poultry.
